PDQ stands for Pretty Darn Quick — the format exists because store labour is the scarcest resource in retail. A PDQ tray arrives pre-filled, the associate tears off the front panel, and the whole tray goes onto the shelf in one movement. No unpacking individual units, no facing up.
A sidekick is the same idea mounted vertically on the side of a gondola or shelf upright. It wins incremental facings in a category where you cannot buy more shelf, and because it sits perpendicular to the aisle it is visible to shoppers walking past rather than only to those already standing at the shelf.
